What's a good truck tent?
A "truck tent" is a tent that goes onto the bed of your pickup or SUV. They've got a couple of big benefits: first, you're more mobile and you can set up camp anywhere. A lot of places aren't good places to put down tents because the ground is rocky or jagged and can rip the tent, it's wet which can seep through the tent floor, or it's too hard to get stakes in easily. Truck tents let you just put it onto your vehicle, so wherever you can get the truck to, you can camp.
The downside is that they can't really go anywhere your truck can't - so if you're planning on backpacking with a tent, you need something else.

Otherwise it's pretty much like a normal dome tent - it's got a sky view for stargazing, a number of pockets and clips inside to store stuff, and its own floor (so you're not just sleeping on a truck bed). Sportz III Pickup Tent - The Sportz Pickup Tent is made for pickups with bed length of around 6 feet (and it works best if you've got a tailgate to prop it on, too). It fits two people, and it's got little ventilation flaps that keep it from getting too hot. It's also got a little canopy for you to sit under, and it's got a little more room than most similar models. It costs about $180 and you can get it online here. |

Sportz Original Camo Truck Tent - This is the classic camping tent for the back of a pickup. It weighs about 10 pounds, is easy to set up, and fits on a number of different models. The only problem is it's a little smaller than some of the more recent ones. It's about $170 and available online here. |
