What are mummy sleeping bags?

Mummy sleeping bags are sleeping bags that are basically designed so that you can zip them up completely around you. They get their name because they kind of look like those King-Tut style coffins that you'd see a mummy in. Why would you want to zip yourself up completely? Well, low temperatures are the main reason. People who are hiking or camping out in the winter or in colder areas will love these, as they are often able to keep people warm even in very cold weather. Another big reason is bugs. If you decide to spend the night near a mosquito breeding ground, you'll regret not having one. They've got enough room for you to comfortably move your arms around inside, but they get rid of the excess space that exists in a normal sleeping bag. That means less area to keep warm, which helps in cold weather, and a lighter bag to carry.

Coleman 15 Degree Fahrenheit Mummy Sleeping Bag - This is a good quality bag that doesn't cost as much as the most premium ones. It only weighs three pounds when packed, and is made of synthetic material designed to trap heat inside. You can get it online here for about $75.

Montbell Super Stretch Hugger Mummy Bag - This is one of the premium, really high quality brands. It has down for insulation, and is EXTREMELY light (just over 2 pounds) with very little extra space - the result is that it can keep you warm in weather as cold as negative 8 degrees Fahrenheit. If you are going somewhere that has potential temperatures that low, then this is for you. If you're doing something more than a casual camping trip, then you want the better sleeping bag to avoid the risk of pneumonia or other illness from the cold. If you're a casual camper, then at $380 this is probably more than you need. It's available online here.

Swiss Gear Mummy Bag - This is a lower-end mummy bag that is good for casual campers who just don't want to be cold when they sleep. It can go as low as 10 degrees Fahrenheit. It doesn't have the features or quality of the best ones, but many campers won't really need to get the highest end stuff. It's about $40 and available online here.

Wenzel Ceder Pass Mummy Sleeping Bags - Wenzel makes this cheaper version of the mummy bag. It's able to handle temperatures as low as 20 degrees Fahrenheit, and uses polyester fiber to keep the heat in. It's a pretty solid company, and the price is right: only about $25. You can get it online here.
