Dome Tents

What's a good dome tent?

Dome tents are a great kind of tent with a simple structure - if you aren't going to be in any kind of extreme conditions, then these are for you. They're one of the easiest to assemble, and they also are commonly used for family-style tents because it's easy to make bigger versions of them to fit more people. Another advantage is that you don't need extra ropes or pegs to keep them structurally sound unless you're in a high-wind situation.

The Coleman family dome is a tent that's designed for families - you can fit up to eight people in it comfortably, but of course you'll have more space if you've got less people. It's also got multiple rooms (one big one, two little side ones) which is a plus if you want some privacy. It's pretty easy to set up, and weighs 50 pounds - you're not going to backpack with it obviously, but it won't overload your car either. They've waterproofed the seams and floor pretty well, too, which is great if it ends up raining. Overall a great buy if you're going camping with your family or with some friends.

The Black Pine Dome Tents is a 2-person tent, and the reason I like this one is because it only weighs 5 pounds. That means if you need to, you can carry this with you when hiking (packing the poles is a little hassle, but you're not going to carry around a tent otherwise). It gives you a little bit of range so you don't have to set your campsite right next to your car. The other thing I like is that it's got a roof that can open up for stargazing if the weather's right. It's made of pretty good polyester material, and I think it's a good deal.

Columbia Bugaboo Family Dome Tents

This is a 4 to 5 person dome tent that is good for a normal-sized family. It's got skylights, which are good for looking outside at night, and it also has a pretty good venting system, which can be important if you're camping during the summer to keep the heat from getting locked in the tent. You can open or close the vents as needed. The other feature that I like about this one is the "clean sweep" floor, which is basically a floor you can unzip to dump out all the dirt and stuff that you track into it.

Wenzel "Solitude" Four-Person Dome Tent

This is a somewhat smaller tent, but it's good for a couple of people, up to four. It's got a fiberglass frame that is designed to be pretty easy to assemble. The fabric is also made to be UV resistant - a big plus because it can keep your exposure to cancer-causing UV rays down. The flooring is made from a polyethylene material that is designed to keep water leaks from happening but also to stop rips and punctures that can happen if you aren't careful about where you set the tent down.
