What are dog backpacks for camping?

Dog backpacks are exactly what they sound like: little backpacks that you put on your dog. They're really a lot more like saddlebags for a horse than backpacks, but the idea is the same. Basically, you're putting a pack on your dog so that it can carry around some of the weight for you if you're hiking or camping with it, or just going on a very long walk. That may sound like some kind of forced labor for the dog, but it's really not. Most people can barely carry enough stuff to survive when hiking on their own, and if you take a dog along you're going to need extra supplies. The solution is to just pack those in and let the dog carry them. Obviously you shouldn't be overweighting the dog - don't put anything extremely heavy in there, and weigh it beforehand so that you know it's not too much for the dog to carry over a long distance. Personally, I would also try walking the dog with it on and full before I took it hiking, just to make sure it won't tire the dog out.

Chuck Wagon Medium Dog Back Pack - This one is a pretty decent quality pack. It's got reflective tape, so that your dog can be seen at night. It has a bear bell on it, which is a way to try to drive bears away (supposedly they don't like the sound). The buckles are padded so that they won't chafe against the dog. You can get the small dog backpack here online for around $45 for dogs 15-35 pounds, a medium dog backpack here online for around $50 for dogs 35-65 pounds, for $55 the large dog backpack here online for dogs 65-95 pounds, and the extra-large here online for bigger dogs at $50.

Ruffware Dog Backpacks - Ruffware probably makes the highest quality backpacks for dogs. They've got internal water bladders positioned so they keep the dog cool and you don't have to carry water for the dog. They have pockets to store a treat, a leash, etc. It's also designed in a way so that the weight not only doesn't drag on the dog, but gives it a better center of mobility. It's made of very sturdy nylon. The downside is that it's expensive, coming in at around $90. You can get it online here.
