With technology these days, you don't have to rely on a magnetic needle anymore. There are much easier to use electronic versions, and they often perform a number of other functions, including acting as watches and thermometers. You can get anything from a pretty simple, no frills digital compass to a high-end one with a bunch of bells and whistles crammed in.

Highgear Traildrop Electronic Compass - The best feature of this one is that you can just latch it onto your backpack so that you don't have to carry it around. It's got a digital compass, a clock, a calendar, a thermometer, and an alarm clock. They claim to be "water resistant," but that sounds different than water proof, and I've found people online saying that if you dunk it underwater for awhile it will stop working in a couple of days. It's still a pretty good compass, though, and it costs about $35 and is available here online. |

Konus Digital Compass - This is a pretty standard digital compass - it's got a thermometer, chronograph, and alarm as well. It's supposed to have an electronic mosquito repellent, though I'm not sure how well that works. It also has an LED book light for when it's dark. It costs $30 and is available online here. |

Bushnell Digital Compasses - This has all the basic features - thermometer, alarm, calendar, clock, as well as some extras like an altitude alarm and a snooze button on the alarm. It's a pretty durable casing as well - they use rubber to avoid impact to the electronics, and it's billed as "100% waterproof" which is a lot stronger language than the others and I'm assuming means what it says. It's also pretty light, weighing about 12 ounces. It costs about $60 and is available online here. |
