What are some ghost stories to tell while camping?

There are a lot of good places you can go on the Internet to get ghost stories to tell around the campfire the next time you go camping.

First of all, I have to recommend extremely highly a set of books called "Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark." These were by far my favorite scary story books as a kid, and while they're written with kids in mind I'm not sure I would tell some of these to very young children. The art is very good and itself is kind of scary. They've got some of the classics and some you probably haven't heard. I always got freaked out by the "Room for One More" elevator story in there, but there are a lot of other good ones. You can get a boxed set of three books online here for $12, and it's a good deal:

As far as stories available online, here are a few good sites:

American Folklore - This web site has a lot of ghost stories. Many of them are regional, though, so you may have to browse through to find one

Halloween Ghost Stories Site - A page with lots of stories geared around Halloween, but you can use them anytime really.

Castle of Spirits - This is a good site with lots of different ghost stories on it.

There are a lot of classics, and here are some links to versions online:

The boyfriend/girlfriend go out alone in a car and a killer gets the boyfriend - There are probably a couple dozen variations of this one. A good one is here.

A short version of a lot of classics is online here. If you want to use them you'll have to embellish and add in your own details, because these are REALLY short summaries of the core of the stories. The ones I have heard done well: the trucker who follows a woman around, flashing his lights at her and scaring the heck out of her, until she pulls over and runs and it turns out a man with a knife was in her back seat and the trucker kept him hiding with the lights. The Mexican hairless dog that turns out to be a rat is also good.
