What are backpacking stoves?

Backpacking stoves are small, portable stoves designed specifically to be carried around by hikers or backpackers. They're made so that you can use them without any other sources of power, so we're not talking about something electric that you can just plug in somewhere. If you're going any significant distance, you will probably want a stove as it will let you cook food or boil water.

Coleman Apex II Backpacking Stove - This is a small, single-burner backpacker stove that weighs only 18 ounces (although with the gas bottle it's going to be a little more). It can use unleaded gas or Coleman camp stove fuel. Coleman is a well-respected company and it's a good product for if you're hiking on your own. It also gives a pretty constant temperature, which can be a problem with many backpacking stoves because they tend to be lower quality. This one is $60 and available online here.

Coleman Dual Burner Backpack Stove - If you're hiking with a friend, then this is a somewhat larger stove that has two burners so you can cook more food. It's still only a couple of pounds, and it collapses down to take up less space in your backpack. It's also pretty fast, boiling water and cooking in just a few minutes. It uses Coleman Powermax fuel, and you'll need to get cartridges of that separately. It costs about $75 and is available online here.

Multifuel Hiking Stoves - This is a much cheaper model, and you'll have to sacrifice a little in terms of weight and taking up more space than some of the higher quality stoves. It's still a pretty useful tool, as it can use white gas, kerosene, or unleaded gasoline, so you should be able to fill it up at most supply stores. It's single-burner, with the tank attached to it. It's only about $12 and you can get it here online.

Brunton Foldable Hiker Stove - This one is a butane stove. That's a little less flexibility in terms of what you can put into it, but it's also got a long burn time on a single canister (a little over an hour of continuous use) and it is foldable, so you can collapse the burner to take up much less space. The burner weighs about three ounces, but the canister will obviously weigh more. It's about $56 and available online here.
